We have come across numerous heartwarming, inspirational stories of grit and determination in these trying times and one such story is of Surendhar Das, son of a farmer, who has been forced by the lockdown and a poor cellular network to cycle over 5kms every single day for the last two months to learn and pursue his dreams! Confined to his village of Uchalpukuri in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, because of the nation-wide lockdown since March 23, his trouble started with the beginning of online classes for his diploma program. Plagued by miserable internet connectivity, he was unable to connect with his teachers online. Left with no other option in a situation where a lot of students might have given up on their studies meantime, relentless Surendhar picked up his mobile phone and books and started from his home on his bicycle to look for a place with a reliable internet connection – a place nearly 3 km away from his village. Since then, Surendhar, who wants to be a Web Developer, has been pedaling his cycle to this place every day to attend the online classes conducted by DGT, IBM, and Edunet Foundation. He is grateful to National Skill Training Institute, Bhubaneshwar, and his trainer, Mr. Deepneel Majumdar for encouraging him and making it possible for him to continue learning during this grim period. Surendhar also urged all his fellow students to embrace this opportunity in times of adversity and to keep working to fulfill their ambitions and make their country proud.
